Indicative, alongside a couple of other movies, of great things stirring in Romanian film-making, 4 Months staggered all who saw it at Cannes this year, where it beat 20 rivals to take the Palme d’Or. Low-budget and doggedly naturalistic, it examines some of the alarming realities of Ceausescu’s Romania, which persist to this day. The story, based on actual events that have haunted the director since he first came across them 20 years ago, concerns two young girls, one of whom is desperate to terminate a pregnancy. This involves an illegal liaison with a back-street operator, and the anguish of the two is eloquently conveyed via an unerring ear for dialogue. A deeply humanitarian film, 4 Months is also ‘…pitch perfect and brilliantly acted... a stunning achievement’ – Variety.
