Pared down to the point of feeling like a documentary (perhaps by Herzog), this strikingly photographed film presents the bald injustice of the plight of Brazil’s Guanari people, and the story of one groups’ bid to reclaim their land, without dwelling on the subtleties. The title refers to the rich tourists who ply the river, satisfied only if they spot, as well as the birdlife, typical examples of indigenous people on the riverbank. The opening sequence exposes huge ironies, later driven home by the subsequent confrontation between landowner and Guarani leader in which the former waxes lyrical about the three generations of his family that have ranched the land and the latter, by reply, wordlessly gathers up a handful of red soil and eats it. This powerfully wordless riposte istypical of the forceful eloquence of this haunting film. CB
