A Prophet / Un prophète

Audiard’s fifth feature, his most ambitious amongst an ambitious bunch, was one of the highlights at Cannes this year, taking the Grand Jury prize. Unflinchingly realist, Un prophète explores the rites of passage of a young illiterate Arab convicted on an unspecified charge, who finds that a prison education, brutal and demeaning as it might be, teaches him far more about getting on than any schooling in the outside world. Having earned his stripes by killing a fellow inmate, Malik remains an outwardly passive personality but is constantly assimilating the knowledge that will speed his ascendancy. Terrific central performances, a steely palette with surreal touches, “…a flair for pulse-pounding set-pieces” (Variety) and a relentlessly gripping momentum ensure this is one of the films of the year, and a huge treat.
