Adapted from Philippe Grimbert's autobiographical novel, Un Secret is a compelling and intimate account of the reconciliation and ultimate redemption of a family dealing with the shadows of its past. François, a disappointment to his body-builder father, is eclipsed by an imaginary brother who is everything he is not - athletic, fearless and strong. François begins to unravel a devastating secret, one which will shape his own identity. A series of non-chronological flashbacks skilfully fuses the personal with the historical. The legacy of guilt felt by François and his parents stands for the collective responsibility of a nation reconciling itself with its wartime past. This makes Un Secret an important milestone in the cinema of the Occupation and the Holocaust. VT
