Each year, exceptionally gifted teenagers from over 90 countries compete at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). This warm and humorous documentary follows the British team and their coach Dr. Geoff Smith from Bath University in their quest to compete at the 2006 finals in Slovenia. The competitors are young geniuses – 17 year-old Daniel from York is not only brilliant at maths but also taught himself fluent Mandarin in just three months. Yet they also have their share of problems. Many suffer from varying degrees of autism, find socialising difficult and have been bullied at school. Beautiful Young Minds is an intimate portrait of the teenagers’ lives as they prepare for the final showdown at the biggest mathematics competition in the world. AC

Following the screening Richard Klein, BBC Commissioning Editor for Documentaries, will lead a Q&A session with the director Morgan Matthews and Dr. Geoff Smith, Senior Lecturer in Maths at Bath University.

Joby Gee, the editor of Beautiful Young Minds, will be appearing at The Editors’ Forum on Sunday 4 November 2-4pm at BRSLI.
