Martin Strel, the barrel shaped Slovenian who is fifty-something and drinks two bottles of wine a day, is an unlikely candidate for the world’s greatest endurance swimmer. Having swum the lengths of the Yangtze, Danube and Mississippi he is now making an insane attempt to swim the longest and most perilous river in the world, the Amazon. The swim is nearly 4,000 miles and will take 66 days through crocodile and piranha-infested waters. Strel hopes his swim will highlight the pollution and environmental devastation of the Amazon basin. This bizarre and captivating documentary begins as a humorous road (river?) movie but shifts to something much darker and reminiscent of Heart of Darkness as we witness Strel’s physical and psychological breakdown.
