Rondo Theatre

With: Hugues de Montalembert (narrator)

Gary Tarn's remarkable film, winner of many international awards, tells the story of Hugues de Montalembert, a French artist and filmmaker living in New York who was blinded during a violent assault in 1978. Portraying a unique man and his extraordinary reaction to a life-changing trauma, Tarn has created an expressionist film whose power lies in its visualization of a world from the perspective of the blind de Montalembert. Part survivor's testimony, part philosophical meditation on the nature of perception, Black Sun is a celebration of life that makes us see the world anew. ‘It's one of the boldest, most beautiful and haunting films to have appeared from anywhere' - Daily Telegraph. CB

We warmly welcome filmmaker and composer Gary Tarn to BFF to take audience questions following the screening.

This film I found a deeply moving account of the struggle to overcome personal tragedy. For a painter loss of vision is the cruellest blow, but the courage and fortitude of the man not to be beaten and to rise again is immensely admirable. The attack , the long rehab period and his amazing solo travels was brilliantly described, and only reinforced the impression of someone finding a life's work in embracing limitations and creating virtues. Painting's loss was surely writing's gain. Gary Tarn's film is so worthy a document in every way. Nothing here detracts from those determined words, made weighty by the lightest touch of edit. The illustrative images beautifully punctuated with a paired soundworld dancing before us. Just stunning.
