Before Robin Hood there was Captain Blood. Same director, same cast, and a plot rather like Robin Hood at sea. Warner Bros. took a chance on an unknown actor from Tasmania, but their gamble paid off big time, as Flynn became an international star and sex symbol. The term ‘swashbuckling' could have been invented for this film, as Errol leaps the rigging, sword in hand, a smile on his lips, while he woos Olivia and thwarts Basil (who disliked Flynn on sight). Part of our ‘Warners at 85' celebration, this vintage classic is an ideal family film - the kids would enjoy it enormously, and it would demonstrate that modern adventure films aren't necessarily any better. I defy anyone not to come out of Captain Blood feeling exhilarated. Buckle that swash! PR
