Misplaced trust in a rekindled college-days friendship sparks disaster for Marcus, his family and friends in this kaleidoscopic drama of modern manners. Lewis, Fiennes, Scott Thomas and Cruz (what a cast!) are all on top form in Martha Fiennes’ ambitious 2nd feature. It has a very contemporary feel in that its themes have emerged during Blair’s tenure - crumbling social services; schoolkids with the mentality of gangsters; corrupt peers of the realm. A kind of Ploughman’s Lunch for our times then, but of a more inclusive kind. Fiennes soeur bites off a lot but never more than she can chew, delineating with aplomb the central relationship between the naïve Marcus and his old band mate turned calculating tabloid journo, which serves as the catalyst for the scandal that leads to the unravelling of everybody’s lives. Refreshing to see a British film of such style and distinction that is neither costume drama nor social realism - last one that comes to mind is 2004’s My Summer of Love. CB
