A poignant, memorable meditation on childhood from one of the UK’s most visionary and talented directors. Based on his upbringing in a working class family in Liverpool, the film was acclaimed as a major achievement on its release 20 years ago and its reputation has grown ever since. What Davies achieved was to combine a harrowing story with a poetic sensibility, so that we can see how the artist that Davies became was born during a period where cruelty was the prevailing mood. Pete Postlethwaite, before he became a star, is the brutal father who tyrannises his family, while Freda Dowie is equally excellent as the wife and mother whose spirit is never broken. Terence Davies will introduce the screening and take questions about it and his other films afterwards. PR
