Distant Voices, Still Lives

A poignant, memorable meditation on childhood from one of the UK’s most visionary and talented directors. Based on his upbringing in a working class family in Liverpool, the film was acclaimed as a major achievement on its release 20 years ago and its reputation has grown ever since. What Davies achieved was to combine a harrowing story with a poetic sensibility, so that we can see how the artist that Davies became was born during a period where cruelty was the prevailing mood. Pete Postlethwaite, before he became a star, is the brutal father who tyrannises his family, while Freda Dowie is equally excellent as the wife and mother whose spirit is never broken.
