‘A misunderestimated man' is the tagline of Stone's serio-comic slant on George W. Bush and his improbable journey to the presidency of the United States. With the race for the presidential elections drawing ever closer (how could we not show the film on US election night!), W. promises to be a modern day Dr Strangelove, yet scarily its characters are based on real, living people running the US government. Josh Brolin gives a standout performance as Dubya, easily personifying the Christian zeal and Texas swagger. Stone has called the film ‘more of a soufflé', less psychologically heavy than his previous films about troubled presidents and ensuing conspiracy theories (Nixon, JFK). Don't expect a dramatic retelling of Dubya's life, instead remember the wise words of an outgoing president: ‘Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.' VT
