A towering performance from William H. Macy marks this David Mamet-scripted exploration of the thin line between ‘civilisation’ and our baser instincts. Edmond Burke’s repository of dormant bigotries and unacknowledged desires is flung open when a business meeting is suddenly cancelled. Responding to an unrecognisable but insistent call, he leaves his wife and strays off his well-beaten path into a netherworld which engages him in a no-holds-barred quest of self-discovery. A veneer of urban horror adds sheen to a serious, and riveting, morality play; and Macy is terrific. CB
