Alienated by life in Paris, Zano sets out on foot with his tempestuous girlfriend Naïma for Algeria, the country their parents were forced to flee many years earlier. Tony Gatlif’s films (Gadjo Dilo, Latcho Drom) explore the yearning restlessness of Romany peoples through a vivid interaction with their colourful culture. While Exiles differs from Gatlif’s other movies by having more formal emphasis, his mastery of the ‘loose-weave’ narrative, which knits together coherently and conveys an unforgettable impression, is still very much in evidence. Full of beautiful imagery and wild music, and boasting an ecstatic climactic sequence which builds inexorably in intensity, Exiles is exhilarating. CB
