Tender and lyrical film of Nobel Prize-winning novel about a 14 year old Hungarian in a concentration camp. If, like me, you think that there are already enough concentration camp films, and that you don’t need any more, think again. This is a wonderful film – full of unexpected qualities that transcend the conventions of the genre. We are left in no doubt about the suffering and the cruelty, but there is an eloquence about the details of life in the camp, as well as before and after, which brings us closer to the personal tragedy and away from posturing and sentimentality. I strongly recommend it. PR
