A gripping realist drama, with largely non-professional actors putting in highly credible performances for director Kechiche (Couscous). Taciturn Krimo, pressured by peer expectations and addled with adolescent selfconsciousness, sees a way to win the girl of his dreams. Taking the place of a friend in rehearsals for the school play, he's suddenly close to Lydia who plays the coquettish female lead. But even the poet's words of love can't convey his feelings. The high drama of French classicism and the reality of life for poor Tunisian families in a Paris housing project inform each other in this articulate film about inarticulacy. The mundane events are shot and edited in such a way that the film grips from start to finish. Anyone who enjoyed Couscous will find this more tightly-structured film equally satisfying. CB
