Stephen Poliakoff’s power as writer-director lies in his ability to deconstruct history, showing how the veneer of civilised society can crack open during times of uncertainty. Set on the cusp of the Second World War, Glorious 39 reminds its audience of a precarious time when appeasement with Hitler was seriously contemplated in certain corners of the British establishment. The story centres on the formidable Keyes family and eldest sibling Anne (a shimmering, Hitchcockian performance by Garai) whose idyllic lifestyle begins to unravel when she accidentally stumbles across a batch of gramophone records. Poliakoff cleverly exposes the strangely inhuman decisions of wartime where family bonds take second place to the concerns of the nation. VT
We are delighted that director Stephen Poliakoff will be with us in Bath to introduce the screening.
