This unflinching and controversial film about the Vietnam War won an Oscar for best documentary in 1974. It is an extraordinary, emotional film, which captures the thoughts and feelings of the era and has many disquieting parallels with the situation in Iraq today. Both wars began on a false premise (The Gulf of Tonkin ‘incidents’ in 1964 versus Saddam Hussein’s non-existent weapons of mass destruction) and both wars have failed to understand the complexity of ethnicity, religion and history. Using a wealth of sources from interviews, to newsreels, to documentary footage, director Peter Davis creates a powerful affecting portrait of the disastrous effects of war. Strong images and passionate testimony combine to make this an unforgettable film that still resonates today. AC
