The typographic font Helvetica is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. Helvetica gets everywhere, from toilet signs to the logos of Toyota, Nestle and even the United Nations. Sounds obscure, but this is a fascinating and witty documentary that explores the history of graphic design and global visual culture. Exposing the worldwide ubiquity of Helvetica and how we are manipulated by branding, it includes rare interviews with distinguished designers such as Neville Brody, Massimo Vignelli and Hermann Zapf. Some of them are great advocates of the font, others loath it with a passion. Whatever your personal view, this lively and entertaining film will ensure that you never walk down a street and look at signs in quite the same way again. AC
