Six years in the making this lyrical and mesmerizing documentary follows a family of ‘Nat’ carnival and street entertainers who perform on the streets of Kolkata, India. The Nat community are descendents of a royal warrior caste once held in high esteem but now treated as untouchables and forced to live on the fringes of society. The film focuses on young Raja and his siblings (all named after Bollywood films) who are sent out to perform as soon as they can walk. As the story unfolds we see the sisters married off, the oldest son bring home his new bride and the family spiralling into debt. Beautifully observed with strong attention to detail this colourful family saga reveals the complexities of Indian society. AC
