Framed for the abduction and murder of a child, Lee Geum-Ja spends her 13 years in prison forging alliances with fellow inmates through her kindnesses and coldly planning the retribution for which she will enlist their help. In this amazingly assured and stylish (and bloody!) thriller, the third and best in the director’s ‘Vengeance’ trilogy (preceded by Sympathy for Mr Vengeance and Old Boy), almost every scene is dominated by the presence of Korean superstar Lee Young-Ae. Her mesmerising performance and the facility with which Chan-wook Park deploys his extensive directorial skills make Lady Vengeance an overwhelming experience. Not to be missed. CB
