Longing (Sehnsucht)

Reminiscent of a John Cassavetes film, this debut feature examines the destructive consequences of infidelity. Markus is a volunteer fireman, happily married to his childhood sweetheart, who becomes deeply unsettled after accidentally chancing upon a double suicide attempt. Witnessing awakens in Markus a longing to carry out his erotic desires in order to feel alive, and his reaction is to get drunk on a training weekend and wake up next to a local waitress, then to find himself torn between his devoted wife Ella and waitress Rose. Grisebach shows how extraordinary circumstances can change everyday existence for better or worse and leaves us in no doubt that these are people profoundly unsettled by the unexpected depth of their feelings.
