It’s an exceptionally hot weekend and the lives of seven people are changed forever by an incident involving a man, his dog and a freight train. Sarah Watt’s wonderful debut feature takes its cue from Altman’s Short Cuts and González Iñárritu’s 21 Grams in its weaving of a story from disparate threads. But Look Both Ways establishes its own visual style by incorporating animated sequences (Watt is an award-winning animator) within the live action which explore the characters’ struggle to make sense of this life-altering occurrence. Although concerned with coming to terms with death, the film is spiced with an honest, quintessentially Australian humour. CB
