Hannu Karjalainen is a Helsinki based artist working mainly with video and film installations. In Hannu's wide screen installation Man in a Blue Shirt (2006) one is confronted with a medium close-up of an elderly man, eyes closed. The man gently tilts his head with resolute composure whilst thick paint is poured over him. The thick liquid cascades down over the man's forehead, eyes, nose and mouth. His entire head is covered. The flowing gloss paint fills in the man's weather face whilst the audience looks on. The act seems aggressive and soothing in equal measures.

Man in a Blue Shirt was produced by Picture This whilst Hannu Karjalainen was on a residency at Spike Island, Bristol.

Presented by Contemporary Art Programming.
