Mark Leckey is one of this year's Turner Prize contenders. He makes films with the same kick-ass delivery as the American Beat poets - marked by visceral engagement and gritty worldly experience. A prolific film and sound artist, his work is a fusion of both sonic and visual found and original footage that captures the zeitgeist of today's popular culture. Leckey's film installations refine the all too prevalent YBA style of sardonic swagger that blunts much of today's contemporary art. His scholarly, multifaceted installations celebrate and attack what he sees as the destructive forces of materialism and orthodoxy. Leckey is Professor of Film at Städelschule in Frankfurt. His work can be found in several museum collections, including London's Tate Modern. EH

Dr. Neil Mulholland is Director of the Centre for Visual & Cultural Studies, Postgraduate Coordinator in Art & Design and a Reader in Contemporary Art Theory at Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland.
