Memories of Underdevelopment

Alea’s fifth film charts the complex emotional voyage of Sergio, a wealthy Cuban writer who is battling with the social changes within his native land. Set in the early Sixties, shortly after the Bay of Pigs invasion, Sergio struggles to find his place as those closest to him flee to Miami to avoid the impending dissension. The narrative homes in on the writer’s thoughts and experiences, all of which are wrapped up in Alea’s rich direction and generous cinematic experiments, which include slices of documentary footage, still photography and glimpses of pornography. As the protagonist analyses the country which is breaking down around him, Alea’s stunning talent as a filmmaker perfectly encapsulates the atmosphere. DR
