A fine example of a film which clearly draws inspiration from many sources – German Expressionism, Japanese Animé, film noir, Blade Runner, Sin City – yet manages to create something quite unprecedented. In the Paris of 50 years hence a brilliant young geneticist is kidnapped. The Avalon Corporation, her employer, are desperate to retrieve Ilona, whose work is vitallly important to their research on human ageing, and engage the notorious hostage recovery operative Karas to find her. Using cutting-edge digitising techniques that subtly modify live action, this starkly monochrome ‘graphic film’ was huge in France earlier this year and packs a satisfying dramatic punch. CB
