Self Made is a hybrid of documentary and fiction by Turner Prize artist Gillian Wearing. This is Wearing's first feature film and its starting point was an advert she put out to the public asking, "If you were to play a part in a film, would you be yourself or a fictional character?" Successful applicants were cast and put through a series of workshops with method acting coach Sam Rumbelow. Part teacher, part therapist Rumbelow takes the participants on an intense personal journey to prepare for their chosen characters. The film inter-cuts actuality and fictional scenes to reveal the juxtaposition of real and fantasy selves. The result is raw stuff - powerful and sometimes painful to watch but ultimately cathartic, "...a lucid, concise précis of a project of great emotional intensity" - Dave Calhoun, Time Out. EH / AC
Director Gillian Wearing and Method Acting Coach Sam Rumbelow will take part in a Q&A session after the screening.
