The Festival’s Honourary President Christopher Frayling presents a fascinating insight into the long-standing marriage between Conan Doyle’s urbane über-detective and the silver screen, referencing such Holmes impersonators as Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing, John Barrymore and Eille Norwood, who played the sleuth on screen more than any other actor and starred in Maurice Elvey’s The Hound of the Baskervilles of 1921. Holmes was one of the first literary characters to be filmed; and Professor Frayling will illustrate his talk with images and clips from the last 100 years. A screening of a classic version of The Hound of the Baskervilles will follow the talk. CB
