Sleep Furiously
This quiet, beautifully composed study of life in a mid-Wales village depicts an isolated rural community in mid-transition: almost all of its established institutions are under threat and most of the inhabitants have passed middle age. We watch and listen as they go about their lives undaunted by, though surely conscious of, the threat of significant change in their lives; the silences between carefully chosen words, the practised absorption in a work routine, the slow progress of a figure through a drizzle-misted landscape - the details of this spacious film convey eloquently the endurance of the protagonists in their faltering world. With empathy and an eye for the surreal, Koppel has painted a wonderfully impressionistic film, framed elegantly by Aphex Twin's gilded score. AG
Gideon Koppel and producer Margaret Matheson will be present to take questions.
