Standard Operating Procedure

Leading documentary filmmaker Errol Morris (Fog of War, The Thin Blue Line) investigates the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at the hands of U.S. forces at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison. Awarded the Grand Jury Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, the film inter-cuts testimonies from the soldiers with artful drama reconstructions. The interviews, especially that with Lynndie England (the woman photographed with an Iraqi prisoner on a leash) who appears unrepentant, are disturbing and the formal beauty of the film makes the horrors it depicts even more stark. Morris spent two years investigating this story, poring over thousands of documents, transcripts and photos. The result is a film that allows us to understand the world and mindset which produced the now infamous photographs, which are especially chilling on the large screen. AC
