Hitchcock's mastery of film form is nowhere more evident than in his 1951 film Strangers on a Train, based on the Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name. ‘Isn't it a fascinating design?' said the director, ‘One could study it forever'. The film tells the story of rising tennis star Guy Haines, desperate to divorce his promiscuous wife and be with the woman he loves. Enter Bruno Anthony, an unhinged but charming socialite, who proposes that ‘Each fellow does the other fellow's murder. Your wife, my father - criss-cross.' The theme of criss-crossing runs throughout the film, building its intricate, web-like structure with everything connected. A thriller in the literal sense, this is Hitchcock at his most slick and compelling. AD
