at tickets.comA staggering piece of work, Prince Achmed is the most perfect example of ‘silhouette’ animation, in which characters are cut from black card. Lotte Reiniger was a true pioneer who invented and refined techniques during the three years it took to make the film and personally hand-cut every character. The story is from the 1001 Nights. Prince Achmed is tricked into mounting a magic flying horse, but tames the beast and flies off in pursuit of ogres and princesses. The range of moods and subtlety of expression is testament to Reiniger’s creativity, and the film exudes boundless joie de vivre. Equally pioneering in his own field, Geoff Smith has devised and built his own variously-tuned dulcimers. He has toured to acclaim with accompaniments to silent films. He will answer audience questions after tonight’s performance. CB
