A violent hockey match and endless betting on the nags qualifies this magnificent romp for our Celluloid Games strand. Based on Ronald Searle’s 1950s cartoon series, St Trinian’s views a failing girls school through the eyes of an undercover policewoman. Aside from the gambling, home-brewed gin, and the violent practical jokes, she uncovers slightly more than she bargained for. Alastair Sim stars as the school’s eccentric headmistress, Millicent Fritton, as well as her wayward younger brother, Clarence. The ‘belles’ themselves prove less than lady-like as they battle together against their teachers, rival schools, the police force, the Ministry of Education and each other. "In other schools girls are sent out quite unprepared into a merciless world, but when our girls leave here, it is the merciless world which has to be prepared" – Miss Fritton EH
