A twisting chamber piece leavened with sly humour, this tautly-made encounter between two men in a bird hide on the atmospheric Suffolk mudflats heralds the arrival of a new directing talent in Marek Losey, grandson of Joseph, and should mark Alex Macqueen, who as über-twitcher Roy Tunt is unforgettable, as a name to watch. The comic absurdity of the twitcher’s quest – Roy is hoping to complete his list with a sighting of the Sociable Plover – marvellously offsets the sinister arrival of Dave. But what appears to be a riff on genre conventions soon deviates into less predictable waters – what exactly is being hidden by this hide? With slanting light glossing the film with the appearance of a graphic novel, the truth gradually emerges from the shadows! CB
We are delighted that both Alex Macqueen and Producer John Schwab will be with us to take your questions after the screening.
