The illegal dumping of toxic chemicals into Seoul’s Han river results, after a number of years, in a monster which emerges from the river and preys on the unfortunate South Korean capital’s populace. A terrific buzz at both this year’s Cannes and Edinburgh film festivals accompanied screenings of this film from the director of Memories of Murder, which expands on traditional monster movie conventions while maintaining close enough contact with them to work superbly within the genre. It’s all done in great style - convincing, subtle performances, tremendous special effects and perfect pacing ensure very effective shocks. Best monster movie in years! CB
