Mark Whitacre was a very senior executive at a big American company called ADM. While working there, he agreed to act as a mole for the FBI who were conducting a price fixing operation. This much is fact. Soderbergh’s film looks deeper into this complex case, portraying Whitacre, played by Matt Damon, as a man who was both informant and fraud himself. Rather than following in the footsteps of Michael Mann’s The Insider, The Informant! does not take itself too seriously. Soderbegh’s angle seems to be that Whitacre was a delusional man whose decision to do the right thing was partly motivated by a desire to help himself. It’s an unlikely source for comedy, but a successful one. PR
