The Limits of Control

limitsofcontrolpic

Perhaps uncomfortable with the success of Broken Flowers, here Jim Jarmusch returns to the non-commercial territory in which he made his name. With its single-minded protagonist and round of assignments at café tables, this film suggests 1999’s Ghost Dog meets 2004’s Coffee and Cigarettes. An enigmatic and immaculately-dressed hitman trawls Spain, making contact with an odd assortment of nameless oddballs (‘Blonde’; ‘Nude’; ‘Mexican’; ‘American’…) with whom he trades passwords and matchboxes. His contacts take the opportunity to name check and expound on a universe of cultural references, often cinematic, while we are left wondering where all this is leading. In fact it’s another of the exquisite shaggy dog stories which Jarmusch cannot help but expertly concoct – an exceedingly stylish and beautiful-looking riddle, laced with dry humour and an absolute-zero degree of cool. Just delicious! CB
