Orson Welles’s second film about a family at the turn of the century trying to adjust to the modern world. The story behind this film is almost as engrossing as the film itself. Suffice to say that the version Welles intended has never been seen and never will be, but what is left is still a masterpiece of lighting, style and performance that leaves most other movies standing. Based on a novel by then-popular Booth Tarkington, Welles uses the text as an excuse to create some of the most memorable and influential scenes in cinema, proving that Citizen Kane was no fluke. PR
