The Night of the Sunflowers (La Noche de los girasoles)

A huge hit in Spain, this enticing first feature juggles its complex plot, involving the discovery of a girl’s body in a field of sunflowers (mute witnesses to her rape), with aplomb. Six time-hopping vignettes give clues, Rashomon-like, as to what might have happened, and to who might have done it, but this is far more than a simple brainteaser. A finely written collection of characters, all of whom struggle with private dilemmas while trying to grasp some explanation for the victim’s demise, and all of whom might be implicated, are counterpoint to the unexpected wriggles and leaps of the plot, which ensure that the tension doesn’t flag once. ‘…a subtly scripted and exquisitely performed mosaic of community breakdown’ – Channel 4.
