Winner of best screenplay this year at Cannes, The Silence of Lorna is set in Liège and addresses the exploitation of immigrants trying to secure their livelihoods through dubious means, a subject previously tackled by the Dardenne brothers in their film La Promesse (1996). Lorna, a young Albanian woman, dreams of setting up a snack bar with her boyfriend Solko. In order to realise her ambition Lorna becomes embroiled in a fiendish plan devised by local mafioso Fabio. He plans to kill Claudy (Lorna's hapless junkie husband) in order to remarry Lorna to a Russian mobster in exchange for a hefty sum. Will Lorna keep her silence? Dobroshi gives a luminous performance as Lorna - her angelic countenance and quiet intensity elevate her amidst consistently grim surroundings. VT
