The first thing one notices about The Sky Crawlers, apart from the spectacular art design, is how culturally vague everything appears. It’s difficult to place both temporally and geographically – maybe adeliberate ploy to lead us into concluding that it’s set in a sort of retro-future in a fully homogenised world state. In this nightmarish place waris a media contrivance, played out between gigantic corporations to reassure the populace that things are being taken care of. The combatants are ‘Kildren’– eternally youthful adolescents, the awful truth about them being revealed towards the film’s end. The meditative, dystopian worldview of Mamoru Ghost in the Shell Oshii’s latest animé is balanced by stunning arial action sequences and a muted but striking beauty.  CB
