An award-winning and critically acclaimed Egyptian film that follows the lives of a variety of people in Cairo, tackling subjects that are usually taboo. Based on a best-selling novel from 2002, The Yacoubian Building is a complex and sprawling story covering the period since the coup d’etat/revolution of 1952 when Nasser came to power. The film acts as an exposé of the corruption and venality of Egyptian society, and how promises have been betrayed. Bearing some resemblance to Altman’s Short Cuts, and tackling subjects as risky in its native land as homosexuality, fundamentalism and corruption, the narrative switches between different groups and individuals, ultimately revealing the connections between them. ‘A film that manages to be timely, thought provoking and entertaining, The Yacoubian Building is simply unmissable’ – London Film Festival.
