Think of animation and very specific notions spring to mind – animation is Dumbo, is Wallace and Gromit, is Wall-E. Yet animation is far more pervasive than this, featuring perhaps unrecognised in more and more live-action films, and has a longer and more eventful history than many might suppose. Some of the earliest film experiments used animation techniques, and Windsor McCay's Gertie the Dinosaur made her first appearance in 1914. She was the first animated character to possess recognisable human traits, and as such is the true ancestor of Pixar's Wall-E. This year the festival presents one of the most celebrated animated films in history – The Adventures of Prince Achmed, made in 1926. This inspirational film has prompted both this year’s animation workshops and tonight’s event, in which leading practitioners from a range of animation disciplines will introduce and talk about the films and techniques that have inspired them, illustrated by clips from some of the best examples. It will be a fascinating eye-opener on a world of film too often disparaged by the term ‘cartoon’.
