Ceylan was named Best Director at this year's Cannes Film Festival for this film. With a stronger narrative drive than his earlier Distant and Climates, Three Monkeys is a dark thriller about family secrets and their consequences, in which, proverbially, characters must not see, hear nor speak of the evil that surrounds them. When an aspiring politician commits a hit and run, he convinces his driver to take the rap, and so begins a series of deceptions that will culminate in adultery and murder. Ceylan trained as a photographer and his films are renowned for their spectacular imagery. The strange, psychological landscapes of Three Monkeys place its troubled characters in what Ceylan called ‘a specific, separate world of their own', giving the film a distinctly noir aspect. AD
