Times and Winds (Bes Vakit)

Times and Winds
sub-titles

Set against the unforgiving landscape of a remote Anatolian village, Times and Winds charts the growing pains of three youngsters each contending with oppressive parents and the strictures of rural life. Yildiz is terrified when she catches her parents having sex; Yakup, in love with his beautiful schoolteacher, becomes enraged when he finds his own father spying on her; Omer, constantly reminded that he is not his father's favourite, dreams of patricide. Like the changing seasons, the children oscillate between the conflicting emotions of rage and guilt, love and hate. Director Erdem divides the film into five discrete chapters, each reflecting the Muslim call to prayer. The end result is a film in which the rhythm of the seasons becomes a captivating yet brutal musing on man and nature. VT
