Middle aged man falls in love with a beautiful younger woman who loves to shop. This is a film whose plot summary conveys little of its beauty. Appropriately, for a film about a man who draws for a living, the design is gorgeous. Stylised and formal, with a voice-over that enhances the images, it more closely resembles visual literature than almost any film I can think of. The fact that it’s taken from a short story by Haruki Murakami explains Ichikawa’s use of such techniques. This is a film that will stay with you long after you go home. PR
