Tony Gatlif’s latest film continues his recent trend towards a more conventionally narrative cinema. In Transylvania we have a story, and perhaps a plot, nonetheless steeped in the essence of Romany culture. The themes are those that characterise the history of the Rom: displacement, yearning, and travelling long distances in search of something better. Zingarina arrives in Transylvania from France in search of her recently deported lover. Failing to find him she falls in with Tchangalo, a gadjo (non-gypsy). She ends up living with him in his car in the back of which she ultimately gives birth to his child. Featuring some electrifying performances, dramatic and musical, this is a mesmerizing and visually arresting watch. CB
