China is building the largest hydroelectric dam in the world, entire cities are being submerged, 2 million people displaced. Meanwhile luxury cruise ships take tourists on ‘farewell' tours to see the legendary landscape before it is flooded. Set onboard, the film cuts between the well intentioned but naïve western passengers and two young Chinese crew members, one of whom is from a family whose home will disappear. Through their stories we see the contradictions of modern China. Gloriously cinematic, Up The Yangtze is sad and poetic but also deeply ironic and amusing. The haunting and beautiful cinematography, together with the strong sense of narrative, make this film feel more like fiction than fact. AC
