How can the spirit and scope of a live dance performance be adequately captured on screen? Sophie Fiennes ignites this question, and the ensuing combustion is exhilarating. Taking as her subject Belgian choreographer Alain Platel's intense and unsettling 2006 work VSPRS, she offers a unique opportunity to cross the line and penetrate the wilderness in which the dancers are held for the duration of their performance. Platel and his dancers depict an array of physical and emotional extremes, questioning notions of abnormality, set to a forceful reinterpretation of part of Monteverdi's Vespers. This is a vibrant and personal record of that experience. AG

Director Sophie Fiennes will discuss her film with Tiago Gambogi after the screening.
