When the Road Bends is destined to do for Romany music what Buena Vista Social Club did for Cuban. Romany musicians from all over the globe are brought together for a travelling celebration of their culture, but what is their culture, and can it be described in broad terms? Evidently not, as some of the players here are mystified by the practice of others, and don’t always see eye to eye! Away from the glamour of the tour and mesmerising performances the reality of life back home offers further insights, and there’s a nice note of irony from one old violinist when he dismisses tired romantic views of Gypsy culture. Treat yourself to a Romany double dose this festival – see both this and Transylvania. CB
